A day in Tulum and on to Belize

Hey this is Kristi. We skipped a few days of posting (sorry!) but we're having a great time. Mexico was really nice - too bad we couldn't spend more time there! (Dad, Kateri, and whoever else, we're ready to spend some time there when you are). Palenque and Tulum were incredible - those were really nice spots - we'll go back and spend more time there next time.

We're in Belize right now (it's Monday - we've been on the road a week!). Linsday the intern is settled in to her homestay and we'll show her the town and tourist sites today...

Here's Charles' post from today:

Tulum was fantastic. Gorgeous beaches and ruins that are nicely situated overlooking the sea. Yesterday we spent the day relaxing on the beach, a little snorkeling and we even visited Cenote Grande, a local cenote which is one of the entrances to an immense underground freshwater system. We spent an hour or so snorkeling amongst submerged stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Just beautiful with fish swimming in an eerily peaceful existence. Imagine snorkeling and going back and forth from quite darkness with fish slowly swimming around these limestone formations; seemingless endless darkness penetrating into the depths of the caverns. Then popping your head up to the light, the green around, and the loud and swarming cave swallows frantically foraging on insects and rearing their young in the numerous nests among the ceiling. Quite an amazing contrast. This morning I snorkeled out far enough to reach some small reef patches with quite a few fish and on the way back I encountered a sea turtle (cool!). Then we visited the Tulum ruin. If I was going to live in a Mayan city, this would be the place. Right above the beach with rock cliffs and clear blue water below. After breakfast we headed out and arrived in Orange Walk town, Belize late in the afternoon. We stayed with his family and were lucky enough to see his band playing that evening. Today we are going to show the NMSU intern around San Ignacio and get her oriented with the area, the bus system, etc and tomorrow we're off to train with Wildlife Conservation Society in Flores, Guatemala! Wish us luck!
