Northern Belize

KRISTI: Hey everyone. We're here in Orange Walk doinf community surveys and hanging out with friends (Omar and Susie). We're staying a great place Hotel de la Fuente - it's air conditioned with internet...ahhhhh!

Usually we've been heading out on Monday's or Tuesday (Charles to the Chiquibul and me to the villages) but there was a slight change of plans for this week - Charles and the FCD rangers are going out Saturday for a back-to-back trip up 2 branches. I'm headed out with Lenney and Gliss Monday to the Chiquibul (YEAY!) and going from the Chalillo dam up. So we'll all be out there next week; we'll meet up so Lenney, Gliss and Charles can climb some trees. This summer has moslty been about logistics and 'how long will it take to do this section and that one' but I'm glad they'll get to actually get up in the trees and see if any chicks are left from the season.

Right now, we're in the northern section of Belize doing surveys in 2 villages up here: Maskall (Creole) and Blue Creek (Mennonite) communities. Our friend Omar "Gonzalo" was with us in Maskall - he finished teaching for the day and took off to Maskall to help us today. Some photos below of a survey at Maskall.

One above is Gonzalo and Charles looking at the replacement power steering "cap". The only thing that fit at the junk yard - no joke - was the lid of an instant coffee jar they were using to hold screws and bolts. So a handshake later and we're on the road again. We have our week's packed in this July but come August, things will start to ease up. Thank goodness one of my villages selected is Caye Caulker (totally random i swear!) - so we'll end there and head back Flores for a week and then north. I think both of us are looking forward to resting back in the states - which is really a strange concept - usually is the other way around!
